Day 50 – Donating to Hurricane Relief

CNN: The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. The areas covered include the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. The National Weather Service defines a hurricane as a “tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or higher.” Hurricanes are rated according to intensity of sustained winds. The 1-5 scale estimates potential property damage. A Category 3 or higher is considered a major hurricane.

ABC News: 2020 hurricane season breaks 1916 landfall record with Hurricane Delta; as the tenth named storm to hit the United States this year. Delta was the third hurricane that reached Category 4 status in the 2020 season. Hurricanes Laura and Teddy were the other two. AccuWeather’s hurricane season forecast include an increase in the number of forecasted hurricanes to 13, an increase in the number of major hurricanes to six.

The historic 2005 season had similar numbers. That year saw 15 hurricanes, seven of which were major. This includes Hurricane Katrina, which killed more than 1,800 people and was the costliest natural disaster in United States history. Just weeks after Katrina, Hurricane Rita hit the Texas Gulf Coast as a Category 5 storm. More than 1.3 million people in Texas and Louisiana were evacuated.

EcoWatch: Record-breaking hurricane Delta made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane near Creole, Louisiana, striking another blow to a region still recovering from Hurricane Laura just six weeks earlier. Especially hard hit by the one-two punch of storms was the town of Lake Charles. While Delta was weaker than Category 4 Laura, which damaged almost every building in the town, the second storm brought more flooding, inundating hundreds of the same buildings. “Add Laura and Delta together and it’s just absolutely unprecedented and catastrophic,” Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter reported.

CNN: While residents struggle to recover from both storms, non-profit organizations continue to support the area’s recovery.
